Chapter One: The Spark
Chapter One: The Spark
Many years ago, a family was founded - one that would change the course of the very planet and everyone on it. They would survive horrors and atrocities. They would flourish with love and prosperity. They would lead us into the light. They would lead us into the dark.
Where ever they may have brought us to the brink of, it all started with one young lady name Bramble.
Bramble Snoww.

“I haven’t been ignited!”
Those words would forever haunt her memory. They were the end of everything she thought she knew and loved. They were the beginning of her five years of enslavement.
Oh, she remembered that night perfectly. The fall air crisp and dry as it blew through her hair through the open door. Her parents bowed heads, as if they were paying their respects to some great god. In truth they were hiding their eyes from her, for surely their shame and disappointment would have seeped through. They were embarrassed of her - mortified of their only daughter; ashamed that they had brought something so vile into this world. They were humiliated by the implications three men in suits could bring. They did not feel sorry for her. They did not stop the men from digging their nails into her wrist painfully. Most of all, they were annoyed with her cries of protest. Surely the neighbors would hear. How would they explain?
She hadn’t understood then. How could they have expected her to? She didn’t have any of the signs, none of the symptoms, of being a Vestige. She knew she couldn’t have possibly been ignited. Yet the men continued their calm speech, though their eyes showing nothing but disgust for her. They explained that a Spector had identified her. They plowed through her screams, never wavering when she tried to show them her spark. Her spark, imbedded in her wrists that the men so painfully clutched, was dull even before the bruises had started to form. They dragged her out of her house through the crisp fall air into an armored metal van.
She never saw her parents again.
--------~*~-------
“I’m not a freak.” Bramble mumbled to herself. She rubbed her arm as she gazed out ahead. The small building that stood before her was her home now. After five years of torture she could finally rest far, far away from the horrors of Riverview.
She promised herself she would never be owned by anyone ever again. Never allow anyone to control her or force her to do things she did not wish to do. No, she would be her own person now. Ignited or not.
No one was going to stop her.
What a powerful opening chapter!
ReplyDeleteI wonder what she is that could be so horrible that her parents felt the need to give her away.
I love her name, very unusual and unique sounding.
And I'm very curious about what she is, and what Vestiges and Spectors are.
